Congressman John Dingell is a Congressional legend not because he served longer than anyone else in the US House, but because he was so effective in the 59 years and 21 days he was there. I had the good fortune to work with for him during passage of the Affordable Care Act, the Health Care reform bill that few thought would ever happen. To be by his side during that fight was simply one of the highlights of my career. Perhaps most important, I learned to never be shy about passion and devotion to a cause, no matter how steep the climb or difficult the fight.
I served as Campaign Press Secretary for two highly competitive races, for Congressman Paul Kanjorski (a come-from-behind win) and challenger Joe Turnham (who lost by just two points during a peak period for the opposition). Campaign experience teaches you to think fast, seize opportunity, and synthesize data to create winning messages.
You can take the boy out of the newsroom, but you can't take the newsroom out the boy. Yes, its been a decade+ since my last day working for media outlets. However, I still utilize the organizational and presentation skills I developed while producing and writing Breaking News coverage and major market newscasts. Fighting through media scrums around leading political figures and coming up with stories on slow news nights didn't hurt either.
